The original exhibition spaces in the Whitechapel Gallery have been beautifully renovated and are the site for a landmark exhibition of German sculptor Isa Genzken, the first major retrospective of her work. The Bloomberg Commission launches with a site specific artwork by Goshka Macuga, who has been inspired by Picasso’s Guernica coming to the Gallery in 1939 on its first and only visit to the UK.

The display of rarely seen works from the British Council Collection selected by Michael Craig-Martin includes modern masters Bridget Riley, Henry Moore, Lucian Freud, Peter Doig and Ben Nicholson, The Whitechapel Boys looks at the moment when artists David Bomberg, Mark Gertler and Isaac Rosenberg contributed to the formation of British Modernism in the former Whitechapel Library.

Highlights of the opening programme include Mother Foucault with Will Self, Michael Craig-Martin in Conversation discusses his choices for the British Council Collection, Rod Melvin and Special Guests performs in our Café/Bar, the London premiere of Tim Crouch’s award-winning play ENGLAND, and architect William Mann gives his insight into the Whitechapel Gallery expansion.
